What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic comes from 2 Greek words, which translate to “do by hand”. In essence, it means a health care system based on analysing the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system and carrying out the treatment by hand.

It is a Health Care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment. (World Federation of Chiropractic 1999).

The Chiropractors Act 1994 established the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) as the regulatory body and since 14th June 2001 it has been a criminal offence for anyone to call themselves a chiropractor if they are not registered with the GCC.

Good health and mobility rely on a normally functioning nervous system and a healthy spine, and therefore the role of Chiropractic is to bring you optimal health. Chiropractors, here, at the Enfield Chiropractic Clinic, therefore take a holistic approach to your health and wellbeing.

How can Chiropractic help me?

Chiropractic treatment helps your muscles, joints and nerves to function optimally. This allows your body to heal itself naturally, from mechanical injuries. It will help restore mobility, reduce pains and aches that you feel, and it helps reduce chances of further injury to the area in the future.

At Enfield Chiropractic clinic, the treatment provided by our Chiropractors is individual to every patient and we will tailor the treatment to each individual’s needs. As a result, we can apply the Chiropractic care across the ages from babies to elderly.

When can a Chiropractor help?

Chiropractors are consulted for many conditions ranging from backaches to headaches and migraines. However, almost half of the patients that present to a Chiropractor are suffering from Lower Back Pain. 95% of this back pain is due to muscles and joint dysfunction which can be treated by a Chiropractor.

Chiropractors mainly treat;

- Spine, neck and shoulder problems
- Joint, posture and muscle problems
- Sports injuries
- Back pain

What is Chiropractic treatment?

Chiropractic treatment will consist of techniques specific to you as an individual and your condition; they will often consist of unlocking of a stiff joint by manipulation directed specifically at that individual joint. Before this is carried out, the Chiropractors at the Enfield Chiropractic Clinic may also loosen up the area with soft tissue therapy techniques and trigger point therapy on the muscles around the joint that is stiff or locked. The manipulation involves a short and quick impulse into the joint which results in a “pop” sound. This is just gas bubble popping in the fluid of the joint as the pressure is released with the manipulation.

Your Chiropractor will support the treatment that is offered with advice on your lifestyle, work posture and exercise, in order to help manage the condition and prevent reoccurrence of the problem.

How will I feel after a treatment?

Chiropractic treatment is very safe in skilled hands. This is because the risk factors are identified in patients before any type of care is administered and then the Chiropractor selects techniques suitable to each individual to use in the treatment.

We all know there are risks when you attend any healthcare professional, but generally these risks are much lower than other options that may be available for your problem, especially when those options include the use of drugs or surgery.

Most patients coming out of a clinic will report that the treatment has resulted in immediate relief. Some patients, however, experience temporary soreness over the areas that have had Chiropractic treatment. You will find that future Chiropractic treatments are much more pleasant as you feel more at ease with your Chiropractor and the problem is resolving.

Is it safe and effective?

Clinical evidence has suggested that the spinal manipulation is both safe and effective in trained hands. Serious consequences following spinal manipulation by a Chiropractor are extremely rare.

Our chiropractors at the Enfield Chiropractic Clinic will assess the risk of each individual with careful questioning and then take all risk factors in consideration and choose the appropriate treatment for each individual.

Research published by the Medical Research Council in the 1990s showed that Chiropractic treatment for managing low back pain was 30% more effective than hospital management, mainly for patients with chronic or severe back pain.

Training and Qualifications

Most Chiropractors in the UK have had 4 - 5 years of full time education at a specialist college accredited by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). This training covers variety of subjects including life sciences, radiology, biomechanics, orthopaedics, practical training in manipulation, neurology, clinical medicine and differential diagnosis. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose pathology and identify contraindications to chiropractic treatment.

Most UK Chiropractors then undergo a year of supervised clinical training before attaining a full registration with the British Chiropractic Association.

The GCC has mandatory requirement for all Chiropractors to undertake Continual Professional Development (CPD) as a condition for re-registration on an annual basis.

The Chiropractors here, at the Enfield Chiropractic Clinic, are all registered with the General Chiropractic Council and are members of the British Chiropractic Association.

All Chiropractors are trained to evaluate the overall health status of their patients and identify signs of serious or life threatening medical conditions that require a referral to the GP or the Hospital.
